Backyard Sanctuary for Birds, Bees and Butterflies

  • Dream it.

When I looked out into the back yard I saw a 70 foot batting cage but I dreamed of what it could be. It was time to transform the batting cage footprint into a sanctuary to attract native birds, bees and butterflies. I began to do research on the types of trees, shrubs, plants and flowers required to attract Eastern Blue birds.

  • Build it.

During the fall of 2020 I disassemble the batting cage leaving behind the corner posts, pitching mound and at the little league distance and the high school distance. I installed a nesting box for Chickadees and a nesting box for Eastern Bluebirds. I planted Winterberry trees, French pussywillow tree, Milk weed, Lavender plants, Bee Bum, Cornflowers, Daisies, Evergreen trees.

  • Grow it.

On March 27th 2021 a male Bluebird made its first appearance at our bird feeds in the front yard. The following week it was in the back yard working to attract a female. It wasn’t long before the male attracted its mate and the the pair took up residency of the bluebird nesting box. During early April I continued to plant more flowers, shrubs and tree that would attract and retain birds, bees and butterflies. By mid April the female Bluebird started to built a nest inside the nesting box.

It Begins

It begins with an early morning walk. A song bird is perched in a tree singings its heart out. A Black-cap night heron is sitting on a rock. It flies off to another location where it feels safer. The calls of multiple bull frog eco across the water.
